Session lengths vary depending on location booked. This is a slow process of photography so a minimum of 20 minutes per photo is necessary to ensure the best final product. I like to make the experience as interactive as possible, demonstrating how each plate is crafted.

My home studio is located on the West Side of Cincinnati in the neighborhood of Mack South. The address will be sent to you via email upon booking your session.

I can photograph up to 2 individuals at a time for a 4x5 plate & up to 3 individuals at a time for 5×7 and up to 4 individuals for an 8x10. While we're open to trying to accommodate more subjects, please note that achieving clear focus on everyone becomes more challenging due to the shallow depth of field. If perfect focus for all subjects is not a concern, we're more than willing to experiment with larger groups.

YES! You get every plate we shoot during your session as a high resolution digital scan to share wherever you like! Usually within 5 days of your shoot.

Your tintype will undergo a process of washing, drying, and varnishing that takes about 2 days for me to complete after your session. I will have your plate in the mail 1-2 weeks after your session.

Honestly, you can wear whatever feels most like you. Want to keep it modern, get dressed up, stay casual, or go full on themed? All fair game. Novelty pieces like hats or bold jewelry photograph really well, and patterns, prints, and textures add great depth. Props are always welcome too. If you need ideas, take a peek at my portrait gallery or scroll through Instagram @rickyxwillis for inspiration.
Color tones
Reds usually come through dark and moody, while blues show up light and airy. Just something to keep in mind if you are trying to control the vibe.
Glasses
I will usually suggest taking them off for your portrait. Strobe lights can catch reflections, and any lenses with UV or blue light coating often read like sunglasses. Scratches or smudges can also take the focus off your eyes and the eyes are the heart of a good plate.
Sunscreen or SPF makeup
Skip it if you can. Products with SPF can make your skin look darker than it really is. Double check face makeup or cover up for SPF too.
Red lipstick
Red tones come out deep and dramatic on tintypes. Lots of people love that look so just know it will photograph darker than in real life.
Text, logos, badges, etc.
My old camera flips everything horizontally, so text or logos will appear backwards. If you can, steer clear of anything with writing.

If an error on my part occurs, I will gladly offer a reshoot at no extra charge. If you desire a reshoot for personal reasons, there will be a $35 material fee. Keep in mind, the unique characteristics of the tintype process can introduce imperfections, which are considered part of its charm. However, if these imperfections significantly obstruct facial features, I will offer a reshoot at no cost.
-
The initial deposit is non refundable. I understand that plans can change, so if you need to reschedule, please let me know within 12 hours of your scheduled appointment.

Yes, Pets are welcome at my studio! Pet sessions are 45 minutes long to account for acclimation and potential movement, which might necessitate a reshoot. Pets should be able to stay still for around 10 seconds. Bringing along favorite treats or toys can help keep them calm and stationary. To book a session for your pet, please click HERE
